“I want to be that quaint village, which has a refined way of living, and one which lives, eats and sleeps in content.”

The thoughts and ideas behind making of all products are inspired by everyday life.

Since the products are hand made by artisans there maybe variations in finish, shape, color tones and size. This also is a cause that all collections are limited edition.

About Tara

TARA (TheBigSmallStep) is a quest for design sensitivity, giving significance to meaningful textile products with a sense of relatable lifestyle.

The design ethos is to develop fun, pleasing and easy to maintain product line.
While the products are a mix, from stoles to stationary accessories, handmade folk toys to textile collectibles, they have been thoughtfully made inspired by daily life.
Hand embroidery, applique, natural dyes, block printing and old classic patterns are the main elements used repeatedly in our designs.

Another vertical of Tara is repurposing and recycling where ever possible, however it is not a sole objective of our studio.

Prints

Prints that make TARA
The prints inspired by various elements from daily life observations or anything special are a mix of life, humour and imagination.
Block printing has been one of the main surface treatments applied on the various capsule collections.
Explored with lot of variations in the craft itself, there is a constant effort to bring to fore some interesting printed delight.

Fun Objects

Objects that bring a smile or spring some joy is the main idea behind creating the fun objects.
A bright colored toy might bring some warmth or the table top basket enhance a corner of a room.
There is no set pattern or a trend in making these products, just pushing the creative boundaries

Artisans

One of the main verticals is collaboration and opportunity to meet lot of artisans from various textile skills for the production This also includes crafts and crafts persons who have skills which are not heard about, but need their due attention. It is a focused association with artisans and products which are unexplored, but are a branch or a technique and should be seen now.

About Maker

Hirnakshi

Hirnakshi grew up in a family of artists and makers surrounded by arts and crafts object. This developed a natural sensibility and aesthetics towards various aspects of textiles like surface treatments, skills employed in textile production.
Hirnakshi is drawn towards the richness and purity of natural fabrics which also reflects the cultural significance behind textile processes.
Unlike many textile designers, Hirnakshi’s journey has been organic after leaving a corporate career of many years.
What started as a small studio set up has over the years grown and matured into a design studio with depth and unique concepts, with subtle but impactful visual aesthetics at its core.
Hirnakshi has been selling local, national and at international platforms.
Hirnakshi’s unconventional but in-depth learning approach has been to be a learner directly under master artisans. Predominantly certain textiles like Mata ni Pachedi, a declining textile craft of Gujarat.
During some 15 years of her practise, she has found that the wastage in her batch production textile created another opportunity to optimise her material and resource conception leading to an intellectual and fun path of repurposing and recycling with an element of sustainability.
Hirnakshi is also an educator.
Teaching and sharing skills is also one of her core strength besides designing. She believes in sharing her experience in various textiles crafts in an authentic fashion- just the way she learnt from the artisans directly.
Hirnakshi is also a visiting faculty at IIT Gandhinagar associated with the General Education program, apart from collaborating with known and prestigious platforms like LD Museum (Ahmedabad) and other creative studios.
